as good a job of letting the american people know about the medicare fiscal cliff as he has done in persuading the american people that it's a good idea to tax the rich. senator corker has done some good work over the last several months in a variety of areas on the fiscal matters. but a proposal of his has subtracted my support in which he will subscribe today is a proposal to help make the medicare program solvent by reducing the growth of out of control spending by nearly a trillion dollars in exchange for the request for the president for a 1 trillion over increase in the debt limit. taking these provisions together over the next few weeks would provide certainty for the economy and would be the linchpin for the budget agreement that would get the economy going again. republicans have said and the two of us have said we are ready to do a whole variety of things to get a budget agreement, but we have to have someone address the medicare fiscal cliff for the seniors and soon thereafter young americans are going to be pushed over the cliff and they are going to look back at us a

of banished words this year. numbers one and two this year are fiscal cliff and kick the can down the road. now, regardless of today's outcome is the damage already done for congress? whether they come up with a small deal or not here when it comes to the american people, they've already decided congress is useless. >> well, i think those of us who tried to function over the last couple years in congress have been saying that. we can't figure out who even the 10%, who support congress, are. we are totally dysfunctional right now and this is just probably the worst example of it. you know, i heard speaker boehner say a number of times that he doesn't believe in compromise and a lot of republicans say the same thing. they say let's find common ground and act on that. well, there just isn't much common ground. if, in fact, the numbers we're hearing about the senate deal, whether $450,000 threshold or $550,000, that is not a matter of principle. that's just a matter of policy and splitting hairs and differences of dollars. so i think unfortunately we've got a lot of people on the other side of

at 7:40 as the nation watches to see what happens with the fiscal cliff, there's another important piece of legislation that needs attention. if nothing is done about it, the cost of milk could go sky high. here's nbc's stephanie gosk. >> reporter: the dairy industry is calling it the milk cliff. just like tax rates, if congress doesn't approve a farm bill by january 1st, the price of milk could go up. way up. right now an average gallon costs $3.65. it could soar to between $6 and $8. mara has three little kids. that means a lot of milk. >> you have to have it for young kids. it helps them grow. so it's hard when it gets that expensive. >> reporter: for many families, milk is a staple they can't cut back on. >> a lot of families that are tight, incomewise, they don't want to buy milk at $7, $8. >> reporter: it's not just milk prices. all dairy products would be affected. imagine if wisconsin cheddar cost more than imported french brie. what would that mean for the average grilled cheese? one part of the complicated farm bill controls the dairy market. without it, pricing would go
